WHAT IS A GLOBE?
Globe is a true model miniature form of the earth. Globes may be of varying size and type – big ones, which cannot be carried easily, small pocket globes, and globe-like balloons, which can be inflated and are handy and carried with ease. The globe is not fixed. It can be rotated the same way as a topspin or a potter’s wheel is rotated. On the globe, countries, continents, and oceans are shown in their correct size.
latitude
In geography, the latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle that ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles. Lines of constant latitude, or parallels, run east-west as circles parallel to the equator.
longitude
Longitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface, or the surface of a celestial body. It is an angular measurement, usually expressed in degrees and denoted by the Greek letter lambda. Meridians connect points with the same longitude.
what is the equator?
The equator of a rotating spheroid is the parallel at which latitude is defined to be 0°. It is the imaginary line on the spheroid, equidistant from its poles, dividing it into northern and southern hemispheres.
The prime meridian is a geographical reference line that passes through the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, in London, England. It was first established by Sir George Airy in 1851, and by 1884, over two-thirds of all ships and tonnage used it as the reference meridian on their charts and maps.
